It came as a complete shock to me because she had not let it on in the slightest the last time we had met about 5 months prior. Speaking to a few other friends we had in common revealed that it had come as a shock to them too because she had kept her illness a secret from all but a few very close friends and family.

The two days between the day I found out the news and the day I went for her funeral prayers took a completely different direction from the normalcy of everyday life as I was plagued with questions like why, how and what if. It made me realise how short life really is and became a struggle to focus on being truly upset about the little problems that would normally bother me. Seeing all the people who showed up to offer their condolences was moving and testament to what a lovely, sweet person she was. What affected me the most was seeing her parents mourn the loss of their only child yet still try to hold a straight face while making conversation with the people there. Of course they’re only human and did choke up with emotion every now and then.

I was reminded of this because of the article in the TODAY over the weekend, as a girl just my age, Surekha Yadav narrated her journey and struggle as she found out she had breast cancer. It’s an extremely well written piece that’s so moving it sent shivers down my spine. Well worth a read if you haven’t read it already.

While I don’t enjoy reading about other people’s battles with cancer, there is no better reality check as it made me realise just how trivial my so-called problems are in comparison. They’re never a matter of life and death, even when I make them out to be. Everything we complain or whine about on a day-to-day basis, all the ‘struggles’ we go through, none of it comes anywhere close to being significant in the larger scheme of things. They’re all just momentary phases of less-than-perfectness that we chose to harp on.

Made me think about and realise a few things:

  1. Life is short, so live it up. If there is something you’ve always really wanted to do, just go for it, because the day when you have more time on your hands may never come.
  2. No challenge is too difficult to overcome, and if you think it is, think again. If someone can come to terms with the fact that their life is ending, I don’t see why we should be petrified of making a career switch to do something we love just because we might lose a few years. Or be scared to ask someone out on a date or anything else trivial like that, you get my drift.

Made me also think about what’s important to me in life, and recall an exercise I did recently that made me narrow down the values that I hold dear to me down to just a final two. I realised that even though I value things like competence, intelligence and all of that, there is one thing that I would not compromise on and that is family. It is trying times like what these two girls went through when you realise that the only people that will be there no matter what and love you for who you are, are family and of course a few close friends whom you can probably count as family anyway.

Since I’m at it and have established that I should just do what I feel like because life is too short, I may as well tell my family and closest friends (you know who you are) how much I love you and how very important you are to me.

    What I’m just wondering is how difficult it would be to store this phone designed by Miyazawa Tetsu & Ichimura Shigenori. Cases would have to come in weird shapes, and you wouldn’t be able to just slide your phone into the pocket of your jeans.

    It’s a funky concept nonetheless – wonder if it will ever reach mass production.

    Both tools offer practical intelligence for companies and brands, using a proprietary algorithm that uses forty different metrics to track and score bloggers and tweeters – in any language and country – according to their influence.

    Are these the first influence measurement tools out there? Most certainly not. Lots of websites assign scores to influencers based on their online activity. These two tools by Edelman, in my opinion, are behind some others like Klout, which scores you based on your cumulative activity on three social networks – Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare. TweetLevel, as its name suggests, only measures Twitter activity, while BlogLevel only measures activity on your blog.

    The one thing I must say that is different about TweetLevel and BlogLevel, however, is the lowdown section, which gives users detailed information on where they stand on each of the four metrics – influence, popularity, engagement and trust. They’re probably fairly generic based on your score band, but its a start :)

    What I’d like to see now though, is a tool that puts a dollar value to the Tweet or Facebook update of a person based on their combined influence score across social networks and blogs. Let me know if you know of any.

Well now you can keep up with your friends, update your status, comments on friends’ pictures, all on an Excel spreadsheet – no one will know you’re not really working!

    Check out the screenshots below – all you have to do is to go to the Diesel campaign site to download an app, key in your Facebook account details and you’re all set.

    All of this is carried out by Diesel in a bid to make work more fun. It’s a cool little app that will get people talking and some people might use it but it’s more about making a bit of noise around the launch of the campaign and for the relatively small cost of developing a simple app it is something that will get massive coverage because of it’s connections to Facebook. Hats off to Diesel on this one.
